India Bound!

Hi! My name is Amanpreet Singh, and I am rising junior at the University of Pennsylvania from Pelham, NY (which is a town in the suburbs of New York City). At Penn, I major in PPE, which stands for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, and minor in English. I am really looking forward to interning with Shahi Exports in Bangalore, and can’t wait to explore India!

While I’ve been to India before, I was only a year or so old, and thus have no recollection of the experience. I am both excited and also incredibly nervous to return, and expect to have a summer full of amazing experiences, but also serious reflection and soul-searching.

Being a second-generation immigrant and Indian-American traveling to India is a unique experience. My mom grew up in Delhi, and moved to the states when she was just two years younger than me. I am not sure how I will be expected to behave, or how I will feel being in a place where most people look like me, and I am somewhat familiar with the culture, but can’t fully speak the language or know the customs.

I am also so excited to get to know my co-interns (shout out to to Shreyoshi, Julia, and João!) and work in Bangalore. I hope to pursue international human rights/development or labor justice post-college, and I am sure that my experience at Shahi Exports will be invaluable. India, here I come!

Me munching on a salad! Will also probably be my face of contentment eating Indian delicacies and street foods
